The down turn in the weather over the weekend did much to spoil a lot of carefully planned events. The residents of Drishane put many hours of planning into their first ever Garden Fete. It was going to be a gala outdoor presentation with fun and games and food and music and crafts of many countries on the list but alas the continuous rains forced the entire programme to be held indoors. However not to be outdone the organisers still forged ahead and put on the best show they could.

In the dining area there was a wide variety of foods representing many lands ,Pakistan, Lithuania , South Africa ,to name but a few. And the people were there to serve the food,say what it contained , and tell a little about from where it came. Further down in the function room there were displays of different crafts from pottery to bead craft and many other things in between.

All were welcome to come and our Community Singers came and gave a recital of folk songs followed by dancing ,such as waltzing,the Slosh and jiving. Many of the residents joining in.There was a raffle and it was very well supported.

As a grand finale a group representing South Africa,dressed in full national regalia, gave a rousing stage performance and brought the house down.

The purpose of the function was to raise money to buy school books etc. for their children because as they say,they hate taking everything for nothing. Well done to all concerned.

On Sunday the heavy rains poured down on the memorial service at Béal na Bláth where President Michael D Higgins gave the oration. Our Pipe Band was there as it have been for many many years.

This Wednesday August 24^th we hope for better weather as we welcome the Millstreet/Drishane Castle International Horse Trials. The stage is set for this lofty event and the plains of Drishane are in pristine condition. Flowing water keeps the great Wheel of Millstreet turning all day long at one of the fences and the huge wood carvings dotted around the 30k course looks great. Admission is free every day so please come and enjoy some or all of the five days.

Here are the results of this week’s parish lotto draw which was held at McCarthy’s Bar on Sunday night. Numbers drawn were: 4,24,27,29 and the Jackpot was not won. €100 went to Denis & Nellie Kelleher, Murphy’s Tce, The Seller was Mary O Connor and she got €50 sellers prize. €50 went to Cullen GAA,€20 each to Joan Cremin,Drishane View,Paddy O Riordan, Killowen, Millie,Wheely &Tommy c/o the Wallis Arms Hotel, Kitty Cronin, The Rectory,John B Sheehan, Clover Hill, Darragh Sheehan, Minor Row, Kathy Ann Murphy, Kilmeedy & Kathleen Creedon. Aubane.

Jackpot for next week €4,600 the draw at the Clara Inn on Sunday night.

Following the draw on Sunday night Co Chairman Noel Buckley congratulated Denis & Maria Twomey on the birth of their daughter Anna and Son-in-law’s new baby boy and they becoming Grandparents for the first time.

The September issue of Duhallow Today will be in the shops in the near future.

For the next two Monday nights our Community Singers with Marie Twomey will feature on Jimmy Reidy’s Round the Fire Program on C103.7 .Special guests on the show will be Tom Meaney and his lovely daughter Noreen. Noreen is the Author of the popular book on the 1916 happenings in the Millstreet area entitled Ready Willing and Waiting the first edition of which was sold out in record time.

On behalf of us all I want to wish the lovely Denise Collins of Knocknalomon , Rathmore every success in the Rose of Tralee contest .

Our lovely town park is a mecca of activity for people of all ages. And the Adult Gym is proving very popular and the children’s playground is free for all youngsters to enjoy.

Defibilators are mounted at the door of the Youth Centre and at the door of the Garda Station.
